Digital Radiography

Dental radiographs are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam.  Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental pathology and complete an accurate treatment plan.  Without radiographs, problem areas may go undetected.  

Smoky Mountain Dentistry uses digital radiographs because they have many benefits over traditional film.  Digital images are easier to obtain and can be enhanced, making diagnosis and patient education easier.  Digital radiography uses up to 80% less radiation and eliminates the need for harsh processing chemicals.  Digital images can be electronically submitted to insurance companies, which help process claims faster.  They also aid in communication between dental providers. 

Even though digital radiography produces a low level of radiation and is considered very safe, we still take necessary precautions to limit the patient’s exposure.  These precautions include only taking those images that are necessary, and using a thyroid and body shield to protect the patient.
