Tooth Removals (Extractions)
You and Drs. Ferguson and Lambert may determine that you need a tooth removed for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need to be removed because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (impacted teeth) or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
Tooth extraction procedures today are far less painful than ever before, thanks to powerful anesthetics and sedatives. In many cases, a patient who has a tooth removed experiences little or no discomfort, and only minor bleeding. Before a tooth is removed, the area surrounding the tooth is “numbed” with a topical and an injectable anesthetic.
Smoking, vigorous brushing, rinsing, and drinking liquids through straws are discouraged during the post-operative period because they hinder healing and may cause the wound to open. Cold compresses applied to the outside cheek near the surgical area can help reduce any swelling and promote faster healing.
